Most people are unaware that at least 1 in every 2700 children will be diagnosed with a stroke either in-utero or around the time of birth. 11 out of 100,000 children will suffer a stroke between the ages of 1-18 yrs. The majority of childhood stroke survivors will be left with serious, long-term challenges including hemiplegia/hemiparesis (one sided paralysis); seizures; and speech, visual, behavioural and learning issues.
Our Luka had a stroke in-utero, cause officially unknown. The stroke wiped out a section of his right hemisphere, leaving him with left hemiparesis, mild cerebral palsy, epilepsy and dyspraxia. We also expect he will have some learning challenges. However, through numerous therapies, a great attitude and perseverance, Luka is doing extremely well. He is a happy, joyful little boy. Although his stroke has created obstacles on his journey through childhood, it has also given us all many gifts from which to learn and grow. He is a source of inspiration and hope for us.
